They are just two letters. But their effect is immense. They trigger wistful faces, joyful smiles and envious glances. LV, the initials of Louis Vuitton, are world famous. The luxury label is legendary. The cult surrounding the Parisian premium brand began 160 years ago – with a suitcase made from canvas.
Travelling in style is an art. And that which surrounds them is just as important as the contents themselves. Premium designer outfits in a suitcase from a discounter? Mon dieu, unimaginable. At least for the clientele that can afford the finest luxury luggage, and chooses to do so. A suitcase, trolley or travel bag from Louis Vuitton is an exclusive accessory and catcher of envious eyes. It is hard to believe that the hype surrounding the monogrammed luggage began in the middle of the 19th century. Thanks to an ambitious young Frenchman, who set out to Paris on foot to conquer the world.
From layetier to malletier
When Louis Vuitton left his hometown of Lons-le-Saunie for Paris in 1834 he was just 13 years old. He travelled 400 kilometres on foot, paying his way by doing casual work. An apprenticeship as a bag maker in Paris with the luggage manufacturer Monsieur Maréchal in 1837 was Vuitton’s entry to the world of the rich and (…)
