Jimmy Pelka: Tuning hero in the desert state

Superlative power. Since 2008 Jimmy Pelka has been enhancing the performance of luxury cars in the United Arab Emirates with chip and motor tuning. The 31-year-old from Hohenlohe in Baden-Württemberg now has workshops in both Germany and Abu Dhabi. The Swabian is near-overwhelmed with orders, having acquired an excellent name for himself on the Arabian peninsula – and has even been invited into royal palaces. We visited the down-to-earth vehicle mechatronics expert and asked him for the secret of his success.
The Emiratis love tuning their performance cars – why is that?
Fast cars are the number one hobby for Arab men. Even in the higher price segments cars often come with series equipment, so they look for ways to make these special, unique even, which is where I come in. As I love cars myself – and have made my hobby my profession – I know what the gentlemen of the orient want and achieve that for them. The more horsepower, the happier the driver.
How much horsepower do the fast cars have? Why do your customers like the most about what you do?
After I tune them the fast cars often have between 500 and 700 hp. That would also be possible in Germany, legally speaking. However, in Germany you have to pay attention to emissions, which is not the case here in Abu Dhabi. Apart from the fact that the Emiratis are mad about performance, they also place great value on customer proximity. My company PP Performance Middle East has become something like a mother to the extended tuning family in the Emirates.

Where and how did the idea of tuning luxury cars in Abu Dhabi come about?
In 2006 I met my friend and now business partner, Salah Alamoudi. I had tuned cars privately in the UAE for him and other customers. All of them were highly satisfied with my work, and this is where the idea of establishing a company locally came from.
What exactly is tuning, in layman’s terms?
Engine management is read via the on-board diagnostics plug, which all cars are equipped with. This software is then processed by me manually, on the computer. Engine characteristics such as angular ignition spacing, fuel quantities and torque limits are optimised and programmed to enable optimal combustion in the combustion chamber. This is what makes maximum driving enjoyment possible. By the way, the Emiratis favour German car marques. Mercedes Benz and BMW are top of the rankings.

Der 31-Jährige aus Hohenlohe in Baden-Württemberg hat seine Werkstätten mittlerweile in Deutschland und Abu Dhabi. Der Schwabe kann sich vor Aufträgen kaum retten, hat sich auf der Arabischen Halbinsel einen exzellenten Namen gemacht und wird sogar in die königlichen Paläste eingeladen. Wir haben den bodenständigen KFZ-Mechaniker besucht und nach dem Geheimnis seines Erfolgs gefragt.
Die Emiratis lieben das Tuning ihrer Edelkarossen – warum ist das so?
Schnelle Autos sind das Hobby Nummer eins der arabischen Männer. Da selbst im hohen Preissegment die Autos oft Serienausstattung haben, wird nach Möglichkeiten gesucht, die Prachtexemplare besonders, ja einzigartig zu machen, und dann komme ich ins Spiel. Da ich selber PKW verliebt bin und mein Hobby zum Beruf gemacht habe, kann ich nachfühlen, was sich die Herren aus dem Orient so wünschen und setze ihre Vorstellungen um. Je mehr PS, desto glücklicher die Fahrer.
Wie viel PS haben die schnellen Autos? Womit begeistern Sie Ihre Kunden am meisten?
Nach meinem Tuning haben die schnellen Wagen oft zwischen 500 und 700 PS. Das wäre übrigens auch in Deutschland, rechtlich gesehen, möglich. Bei uns muss man jedoch die Abgasbestimmungen beachten, was hier in Abu Dhabi keine Rolle spielt. Neben der Tatsache, dass die Emiratis verrückt nach Leistung sind, legen sie sehr viel Wert auf Kundennähe. Meine Firma „PP Performance Middle East“ ist so eine Art Mutter für die große Tuning-Familie in den Emiraten geworden.
Wo und wie entstand die Idee, in Abu Dhabi Luxusautos zu tunen?
Im Jahr 2006 habe ich meinen Freund, und jetzigen Geschäftspartner, Salah Alamoudi kennengelernt. Ich hatte privat für ihn und Kunden in den VAE Autos getunt. Alle waren hochzufrieden mit meiner Arbeit, und so entwickelte sich die Idee, direkt Vorort eine Firma zu gründen.
Wie müssen sich Laien so ein Tuning vorstellen?
Das Motormanagement wird über den „On-Board“-Diagnosestecker, der sich in jedem Auto befindet, ausgelesen. Diese Software wird dann manuell von mir am Computer bearbeitet. Kennfelder wie zum Beispiel Zündwinkel, Kraftstoffmenge und Drehmoment-Begrenzungen werden optimiert und so zu einer optimalen Verbrennung im Verbrennungsraum programmiert. Dadurch wird der maximale Fahrspaß erst möglich. Übrigens bevorzugen die Emiratis deutsche Automarken. Mercedes Benz und BMW stehen an erster Stelle des Rankings.
